History of Mornington

The Real History of Mornington

A quick history about Mornington brought to you by your sponsor, Handyman on the Mornington Peninsula.

Sit down boys and girls because you’re about to get a brief history lesson on Mornington from your local Handyman.

Mornington was home to the Boonwurrong people until European settlers arrived in the 1840’s

They named it Schnapper Point and after they found their feet, they started to build up this great place we know as Mornington.

It started in 1858 with the construction of a 46 meter pier, then a courthouse in 1861 and the post office in 1863.

After a little break, the Grand Hotel was opened in 1892 in Main Street, Mornington.

And then in 1889 we even had a railway line that connected us directly to Melbourne. But obviously they didn’t like the riff raff that was coming into Mornington from Melbourne so they closed the train line down in 1981.

Thank goodness, hey?

Obviously shutting down the train line didn’t keep people out because in 2016, there were just under 24,000 people living in Mornington.

I think it’s about time we shut the borders.

Anyway…

With so many cultures and so many people now living in Mornington, there’s so many things to do and great places to eat.

Let’s be honest, Mornington is the main destination for anybody coming out to the Peninsula.

Things to do in Mornington

  1. Main Street Shopping

When you come down to Mornington, you could easily spend a day shopping down Main Street. There’s hundreds of specialty shops and a mix of restaurants and cafes. Some of my personal favorites are Casa de Player for breakfast, YoMy Goodness for lunch, and Chutney Bar for dinner.

  1. Mornington Main Street Market

Every Wednesday, the market stalls are set up along Main Street in Mornington. It’s a craft market for creative entrepreneurs who put their heart and soul into their passion then come and sell what they create. If you love markets, you’ll love The Main Street Market.

  1. Mornington Park

Set right opposite the beach at the end of Main Street, it’s a perfect place to take the kids and have a picnic while they muck around on the play equipment. It’s a favourite amongst the locals and a must if you’re visiting Mornington.

Conclusion

Let’s be honest, if you’re coming down to the Mornington Peninsula you’ll most likely be stopping in Mornington.

But be careful…

You may never want to leave. What starts off as a weekend away at an AirBnB, can easily turn into a full blown tree and sea change.

Here’s the thing…

When you come out to Mornington you need to be on your best behavior. We shut down the train lines to keep the riff raff out, don’t make us close the borders too.

No seriously, Mornington thrives on “Outsiders” coming in and spending their hard-earned dollars. So all are welcome and you won’t regret coming to Mornington.
